Biography

Short CV

Christos Housiadas (Dipl. Mech. Eng., National Technical University of Athens, 1983; PhD in Mechanics, Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble, 1987) is Chairman of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) since 2008. Also, he is Research Director at “Demokritos” National Centre for Scientific Research, acting as Head of the Thermal-Hydraulics & Multiphase Flow Laboratory (THEMLab) at the Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Science & Technology, Energy and Safety. He has worked at European Commission’s Joint Research Centre-Euratom for 7 years, the French CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique) for 4 years and at the R&D company Innovations Thermiques (France) for 1 year. Dr. Housiadas has been awarded an honorable distinction by the Greek Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and a fellowship by the European Commission for graduate studies. He has a rich international professional experience, including training and teaching in international courses and significant involvement in R&D policy making, technical-scientific and evaluation committees. He is a recognized expert on aerosol flows (both nuclear and non-nuclear aerosols), with an extensive research experience in the areas of aerosol flows, nuclear engineering, scientific computing, transport phenomena and multiphase systems.

  • 1993-1995: Construction of pilot plant for large volume gaseous detritiation.
  • 1993-1996: Commissioning and operation of laboratory for experiments with hydrogen and tritium (LLTL -Low Level Tritium Laboratory).
  • 1998-1999: Development of operational tools for nuclear emergency responses (software Cm-Hysplit, used in the nuclear emergency response management system).
  • 1996-2000: Development of capabilities for performing thermal-hydraulic safety analyses for “Demokritos” GRR1 reactor. Development (for the first time) of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) methodology for reactor GRR1.
  • 2006-2008: Development of THEMLab Laboratory (self-financed). Set-up and operation of advanced IBM computer cluster (named THALES: THermofluid & Aero-bio-colloidal Large-scale Engineering Simulations). The cluster permits more than 150 parallel processes and has been equipped with advanced commercial software, ANSYS-CFX και Portland Group Parallel Fortran (CDK Kit). THALES is linked with an exclusive optical fiber to the grid infrastructure (grid site GR-05-Demokritos).
